Ukrainian director Mariia Ponomarova, based in the Netherlands, discusses her new documentary "Nice Ladies", which portrays a group of competitive cheerleaders aged 50 and over in Kharkiv. Ponomarova, who has lived in the Netherlands since 2014, was inspired to make the film after seeing an item about the cheerleaders in 2019. Despite the war in Ukraine, she decided to continue with the project, with the invasion influencing the direction of the documentary changed drastically. The film, with an all-female film crew, had its world premiere at the Movies That Matter festival and will be released in the Netherlands in June by Cinema Delicatessen.
